Singhanpur Cave, Singhanpur – Chhattisgarh

A painted rock shelter is located at a place called Singhanpur in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh state. This rock shelter faces south and was created by nature years ago on a hill 20 kilometers west of Raigarh. This place is at a distance of one kilometer to the south from the station named Bhupdevpur situated on the Bilaspur-Jharsguda section of the Central South Eastern Railway. This is one of the rock shelters with ancient rock paintings found in Chhattisgarh, the date of which has been determined to be approximately 30 thousand years BC. These were discovered by Anderson around 1910. The rock paintings of Singhanpur in Raigarh district were published for the first time in India Paintings in 1918 and in the 13th issue of Encyclopædia Britannica. Thereafter, Shri Amarnath Dutt conducted a survey of rock paintings in Raigarh and adjacent areas between 1923 and 1927. Dr N. Important information in this regard was given by Ghosh, D.H. Garden. After that Late Important information regarding rock paintings was also provided by Pandit Shri Lochanprasad Pandey.

The pictures of this rock shelter have become tarnished due to passage of time and natural side effects. The painted pictures include ladder-like men, mermaids, hunting scenes, line-up dancing groups and human figures. The markings of mermaids, kangaroo-like animals, iguanas and snakes are unique. 23 artefacts were previously seen in this rock shelter, of which only 13 now remain. The tall ladder-like human figure here is compared to the ladder-like man found in Australia. The art culture of primitive humans is still alive in the painting of various animal figures, forest buffalo, monkeys, lizards and other pictures. By studying the pictures of painted rock shelters, we get information about the life of the people living there, the environment and nature of that time. Paintings from the Mesolithic period to the historical period have been found in rock shelters located in different areas of districts like Raigarh, Bastar, Kanker, Durg Korea etc. This monument is protected by the State of Chhattisgarh.
