Czech Republic-tribes

The Czech Republic has been settled by many tribes throughout its history, including:

Celts

The first ethnic group to arrive in the area, around the 4th century BC. The Boii tribe were the most prominent in Bohemia and gave the area its Latin name, Boiohaemum, which later became Bohemia.

Germanic tribes

The Marcomanni and Quadi tribes settled in the area in the 1st century.

Slavs

Settled in the area in the 5th and 6th centuries. The migration of the Slavs was driven by the invasion of their area by the Huns, Avars, Bulgars, and Magyars.

Huns

Moved westwards into Bohemia, Moravia, and some of present-day Austria and Germany in the 6th century.

Great Moravian Empire

Created in the 9th century, but destroyed by the Magyars in 903-907. The Byzantine mission of Cyril and Methodius Christianized Great Moravia. They also codified the Old Church Slavonic language and the Glagolitic script.
