San Marino is made up of two ethnic groups: Sammarinese and Italian. The majority of the population is Sammarinese, with a smaller number of Italians.

Sammarinese

San Marino’s history dates back to prehistoric times, but the traditional history of the country begins in 301 AD.

The country was founded by Marinus the Dalmatian, a Christian stonemason who fled to the island of Arbe to escape the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The land was renamed “Land of San Marino” in his honor, and eventually became the “Republic of San Marino”.
