Bandkeramik: Predominated in the area from 5000 to 2000 BC
Cimmerians: Roamed the area by 1,000 BC
Zarubintsy: Became widespread at the beginning of the 1st millennium
Dnieper–Donets: Remains of this culture have been found in Belarus and parts of Ukraine
Baltic tribes: First permanently settled the region in the 3rd century
Slavs: Took over the area around the 5th century
Krivichs: A tribal confederation that participated in military campaigns against the Byzantine Empire
Dregovichi: An early Slavic tribe that formed a local principality
Radimichi: An early Slavic tribe that formed a local principality
Drevlyane: An early Slavic tribe that formed a local principality
The early Slavic tribes formed local principalities, such as Pinsk, Turaw, Polatsk, Slutsk, and Minsk. These principalities came under the general suzerainty of Kievan Rus, the first East Slavic state, in the mid-9th century.
