The main ethnic groups in Cyprus are Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots:
Greek Cypriots
Make up about 80% of the population and are descended from immigrants from the Peloponnese and the island’s original inhabitants. Most Greek Cypriots are members of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Turkish Cypriots
Make up about 20% of the population and are descended from soldiers of the Ottoman army and immigrants from Anatolia. Most Turkish Cypriots are Sunni Muslims.
Cyprus also has several smaller minority groups, including:
Maronites: A small group of Arabic-speaking Christians
Armenians: A small group of people who speak Armenian
Latins (Roman Catholics): A small group of people who are Roman Catholic
Roma: A small group of people who are Roma
