The ethnic makeup of Georgia is a result of the intermingling of various tribes and ethnic groups over time. The Georgian people are descended from tribes that migrated from Anatolia, and their ethnic core is made up of the Karts, Migrelo-Zans, and Svans tribes.
Other ethnic groups in Georgia include:
Armenians, Russians, Azerbaijanis, Ossetes, Greeks, and Abkhazians.
In ancient times, the ancient Greeks and Romans referred to the Georgian people as the Colchians and Iberians. The Tibarenians-Iberians, who were tribes from eastern Georgia, established their kingdom in the 7th century BCE.
Some tribes that have been associated with the area that is now Georgia include:
Cherokee
A large Native American tribe that lived in Georgia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia when European settlers arrived
Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe
A federally recognized tribe that maintains its tribal government in the old Tribal Town of Tama
Etowah Mounds
An ancient tribal center of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture, located on the shore of the Etowah River in present-day Bartow County, Georgia
Guale
A tribe that lived on the coast of what is now Georgia, between the Ogeechee and the Altamaha rivers.
