The Treveri and Mediomatrici were two Belgic tribes that lived in what is now Luxembourg from around 450 BCE until the Roman conquest in 53 BCE. The Treveri were a Celtic tribe that spoke a Celtic language but claimed to be descended from the Germans to bolster their reputation as a warlike people. They were more successful than most Gallic tribes in cooperating with the Romans, and adapted well to Roman civilization.
