MONACO – tribes

The ancient people who first settled Monaco were the Ligurians, an ancient tribe who were known for their hard work and frugality. The name Monaco comes from the Ligurian tribe known as the Monoeci, who settled in the area that is now Monaco.

The history of Monaco is marked by the presence of other tribes and peoples, including:
  • Phocaeans of Massalia: Founded the colony of Monoikos in the 6th century, which became an important port on the Mediterranean coast.
  • Saracens and barbarian tribes: Ravaged Monaco after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476.
  • Ligurians: Reclaimed the depopulated area after the Saracens were expelled in 975.
  • Grimaldi family: Seized control of Monaco in 1297 and have ruled for over 700 years.
