Romania’s history has been shaped by many different tribes, including the Dacians, Illyrians, Thracians, Celts, and Costoboci:
Dacians
The original inhabitants of Romania, the Dacians were conquered by the Romans in the second century. The Dacian language became extinct after the Romans Romanized the region.
Illyrians
The first group to be conquered by the Romans, who established the province of Illyricum around 60 BC.
Thracians
The Romans established the province of Moesia in 6 AD in the lands inhabited by the Thracians.
Celts
The Celts ruled Transylvania from the 4th to the 2nd century BC. They introduced iron-working technology and the potter’s wheel to the area.
Costoboci
A free Dacian group mentioned in Roman sources in the 1st and 2nd centuries. The Costoboci were located northwest of Dacia province.
Carpi
A barbarian tribe that was part of a coalition that invaded the Balkan regions of the Roman empire in the 250–270 period. The Romans defeated the Carpi and forcibly transferred many of them to the province of Pannonia.
Roma
The Roma arrived in the Balkans around 1350 and in present-day Romania shortly after 1370. Waves of migration continued until the 18th century.
